This October, Genesee Community College holds its annual student photo contest! 2023 marks the 13th year of the competition and the addition of an all-new award category: film photography.

The contest is open to all current students and is hosted this year by GCC’s very own librarian Elizabeth Simmons. Simmons has been hosting the competition for three years now and is also tasked as a promoter and the coordinator of judging for the contest. “The contest was created as an outreach activity [and] recognizes student talent,” says Simmons. To enter, students must submit a maximum of three original photos digitally (link below). Alternatively, if the photo/photos are a film print, the pieces must be submitted in a labeled folder or envelope at the library information desk in person.

Why film photography?
Due to the resurgence of popularity for the print style in recent years, the category was revived. Each side of the print must not exceed 10” to be accepted, and all entries will be judged separately from the digital submissions.

There is still time to enter! All entries are due by midnight on October 31st. The judging committee is confirmed to review all submissions a week after the deadline and will be followed by an awards ceremony at a later date.
