Career Services at GCC is currently working towards hosting a career fair for GCC students on April 29.
Career Services Coordinator, Marie Wixner, has been working hard this semester to help students prepare for their future careers. Along with the fair, Wixner has been hosting many workshops the past few weeks where she demonstrates to students and works with them in groups so they can learn more about how to prepare for their future careers.
The list of attending organizations is still a work in progress, but Wixner said, “We’re working with the Department of Labor, and they’re going to recruit companies that they traditionally work with, so, there will be some industries in food service, health care, and manufacturing.”
While creating the career fair, Wixner has made sure to make it a good opportunity for everyone. She is hoping that there will not only be full-time career options but also part-time positions and even internships. She is also hoping to include the online students in these sorts of events by setting up Zoom meetings and being able to broadcast live via Zoom to the online students so they do not miss anything that they may feel is important.
On the day before the career fair, there is a job fair preparation workshop that will be held in room S103 near the Student Union. “The day before the job fair there’s going to be a session called Navigating Career Fairs to learn how to prepare what kind of things you want to think about as you walk around, how do you talk to different vendors, and even how to dress and bring your resume,” Wixner said. “This workshop is before the event, so it’s fresh in everybody’s mind.”
The job fair is a good way for GCC students to create a better opportunity for themselves to not only get a job outside of college, but a career. “So anytime you can get your face out there, your resume out there, anytime you can handshake, have a question with a recruiter, that makes you a stronger more confident student,” Wixner said. “So when it’s really your turn to go find a real-life, grown-up job, this career fair gives you the opportunity to strengthen your confidence and really put yourself out there and learn about where you want to go.”
For any students who may not be able to attend any of the workshops or the career fair, the Career Services Office is always there to help any student navigate their future plans. They can work one on one with any student and help with any need including resume creation, how to write a cover letter, finding opportunities, and many more things.
