20th Annual GCC Student Poetry Contest Winners Announced

The Student Poetry Contest is sponsored every spring by the Alfred C. O’Connell Library and invites entries from all GCC students. Following the entry deadline, this year’s panel of four judges reviewed the poems and chose the winners. Many thanks to this year’s judging committee: Nicki Lerczak, Jessica Hibbard, Mary-Clare Tasber and Loy Gross. A special thank you to the Office of Student Engagement and Inclusion for generously providing prizes. Each winning poet received a certificate and a gift card and was recognized at the virtual college-wide student awards ceremony on Thursday, April 29. The winners will also join students from past contests on the library’s Poetry Contest webpage which stays active year-round. This annual program provides an opportunity for students to contribute to their community, hone their communication skills and express their creativity.

This year’s Awards were:

Best Body of Work: Fear of the Mirror, Holiday Sale, and Mourning What’s Not Seen by Kaine D’Eredita
First Prize: Fireflies by Uriah Howard Allis
Second Prize: A Wallflower’s Tale by Harley Pinto
